Dispatches from Codex Commission Meeting

Protecting Your Family from Codex Deprivations: GMOs Being Forced on the World!
If you are not eating organic food, you are letting those who are degrading your food and your health win. Codex is rigged. The science is rigged and the outcome is rigged. It takes strong, sustained and courageous countries to turn that process around...
But some of the most outspoken countries in our informal Coalition of Health Conscious Nations are not here; in one case, WHO funding was “pulled” at the last moment
Despite the Precautionary Principle (if something has not been proven safe, you cannot use it), supposedly a driving principle in Codex and despite the strong science disproving the safety of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), today the Codex Chair rammed through approval of all genetically modified plants for food use. Noting that genetically modified animals had already been approved as safe for food use, so that there was no reason to dispute the safety of plants [Logic alert!!!!], no dispute was permitted...
That’s how “democracy” works at Codex
Science prostituted once again...
And health violated
The day was replete, as is every Codex meeting, with such examples
For example, beta agonist growth enhancers in pigs: The first and second largest pig meat producers in the world, China and EU, strongly oppose this drug but US wants it because it fattens pigs faster. Plan was to adopt it as a global standard. China’s objection was discounted because China did not attend the last Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs recently held in the US. Of course, as China pointed out, its delegates were not granted visas to attend. This was the same trick that was used to make sure that the strong opponent of unlabeled genetically modified foods from Uganda when Canada prevented him from attending the recent food labeling committee by refusing to grant his visa...
This is a frequent gambit at Codex
China persevered and opposed, along with the EU and many other countries, approval of the veterinary drug Ractopamine which is illegal in most of the world. It shifts nutrients to muscles so animals fatten up quickly and bring more at market...
Of course, it is dangerous for consumers since beta agonists cause cardiovascular, pancreatic and lung changes which could be very dangerous in people who eat the drug (or its by products) by eating the –unlabeled – drug-treated pig meat
The US and the usual gang of suspects, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada, etc, supported the use of this dangerous drug even though it is banned in 80% of the world’s countries US meat is, in fact, regarded so poorly that riots are taking place even as I write this in South Korea because the government there has decided to resume importation of US beef!
US food is known all over the world as Killer Food by those in the know. But, laced as it is with chemicals and produced as it is ever more cheaply, this deadly material is, as the Indian Minister for Food Production Industries shouted from about 6 inches from my face, “Killing America and now they want to export it to kill us”. American food is what world food will become when Codex goes into world effect...
And the obesity and fatigue and mind numbness that many Americans experience will be the FDA’s gift to the world
So what can we do – what MUST we do? Take control of our health by taking control of our food
I promise you that if we do not, individually and collectively, take the following steps, our food WILL kill us...
It is already doing that and we must stop it
Step 1. Eat clean food, no matter how convenient prepared food seems...
It is very inconvenient to get sick and die
a. Switch your budget priorities to organic food...
Skimp on something else
b Grow whatever you can in window boxes or in your garden
c. Get together with neighbors and grow food in vacant spaces or someone’s yard. You would be amazed how much food you can grow using intensive Biodynamic farming principles. Look them up on the internet...
We’ll also be making Biodynamic information available, through our Valley of the Moon demonstration project* Grow organic, of course!
d Find local farmers who do not use chemicals and buy from them Becoming a “Locovore” (eating locally grown foods) is a growing movement
e) Trade services for organic food with people who produce it! Barter may be better than dollars
f Create an organic Food Coop to get good food cheaply!
Step 2. Consider your budget very, very carefully and commit NOW to a regular, recurring donation to the Natural Solutions Foundation which is the only organization which has the possibility of bringing Codex to heel and reversing its extraordinary danger to your life and your health. Natural Solutions Foundation has the relationships necessary to bring delegates to these important meetings under our own sponsorship — 5, 10 or 15 delegates, primed and ready to stand their ground can take Codex over. The only thing keeping us from doing that is money. It’s that simple...
Our forming Coalition of Health Conscious Nations is a coalition of developing nations that need our help if they are to attend meetings and assert our common interests

WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration has added a controversial ingredient to the $770-million aid package it recently proposed to ease the world food crisis: language that would promote the use of genetically modified crops in food-deprived countries
The value or detriment of genetically modified, or bioengineered, food is an intensely disputed issue in the US and in Europe, where many countries have banned foods made from genetically modified organisms
Proponents say that genetically modified crops can result in higher yields from plants that are hardier in harsh climates
"We certainly think that it is established fact that a number of bioengineered crops have shown themselves to increase yields through their drought resistance and pest resistance," said Dan Price, a food aid expert on the National Security Council

Monsanto vs Schmeiser
The Classic David vs Goliath Struggle
****************************************************
A long time farmer and farm equipment dealer from the small rural community of Bruno Sask He served as Mayor of the Town of Bruno from 1966-1983 and as a MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) for the Watrous constituency in the Provincial Legislature from 1967-71
Excerpt from Aug 14, 1999 Vancouver Sun article by Dave Margoshes
"Percy Schmeiser was mad as hell, and decided he wasn't going to take it
Schmeiser has been growing canola -- the yellow-blossomed oilseed that used to be known as rapeseed -- for 40 years, and he knows his stuff...
He's been experimenting, developing his own varieties, using his own seed and generally prospering with canola reaping the benefits derived from growing an increasingly popular crop
So when Monsanto, the giant multinational agro-chemical company that is at the forefront of developing genetically modified foods, accused him of patent infringement and demanded restitution for its seeds, his pride was hurt He chose to fight rather than roll over and take it

Control of world's food supply at stake, Montreal growers argue
Marian Scott, Montreal Gazette
Canwest News Service
Sunday, May 25
Heather Meek leafs through the seed catalogue she wrote on the family computer, on winter nights after the kids went to bed
There are Kahnawake Mohawk beans and Painted Mountain corn; Tante Alice cucumber and 40 varieties of heritage tomatoes
Selling seeds is more than just an extra source of income on this organic farm an hour northwest of Montreal
For Meek and partner Frederic Sauriol, propagating local varieties is part of a David and Goliath struggle by small farmers against big seed companies
At stake, they believe, is no less than control of the world's food supply
Since the dawn of civilization, farmers have saved seeds from the harvest and replanted them the following year
But makers of genetically modified (GM) seeds -- introduced in 1996 and now grown by some 70,000 Canadian farmers, according to Monsanto, the world's largest seed company -- have been putting a stop to that practice
The 12 million farmers worldwide who will plant GM seeds this year sign contracts agreeing not to save or replant seeds
That means they must buy new seeds every year
Critics charge such contracts confer almost unlimited power over farmers' lives to multinational companies whose priority is profit
They say GM seeds are sowing a humanitarian and ecological disaster
But Trish Jordan, a Canadian spokesman for Monsanto, explains that requiring farmers to sign "technology use agreements" allows companies to recoup the cost of developing products
"Farmers choose these products because of benefits they provide," Jordan says
"That's why we're successful as a company"
The debate over GM seeds has come into sharp focus as the world faces a food-price crisis that threatens to push millions into starvation
In recent months, riots have erupted from Haiti to Bangladesh in the wake of soaring costs for staples like bread, rice and corn
The crisis has prompted calls to step up investment in biotechnology to improve crop yields in developing countries

US using food crisis to boost bio-engineered crops

Chicago Tribune

May 14, 2008
WASHINGTON — The Bush administration has slipped a controversial ingredient into the $770 million aid package it recently proposed to ease the world food crisis, adding language that would promote the use of genetically modified crops in food-deprived countries
The value of genetically modified, or bio-engineered, food is an intensely disputed issue in the U
S and in Europe, where many countries have banned foods made from genetically modified organisms, or GMOs
Proponents say that GMO crops can result in higher yields from plants that are hardier in harsh climates, like those found in hungry African nations
"We certainly think that it is established fact that a number of bio-engineered crops have shown themselves to increase yields through their drought resistance and pest resistance," said Dan Price, a food aid expert on the White House's National Security Council
Problems anticipated
Opponents of GMO crops say they can cause unforeseen medical problems They also contend that the administration's plan is aimed at helping American agribusinesses
"This is a hot topic now with the food crisis," said Ronnie Cummins, national director of the Organic Consumers Association
"I think it's pretty obvious at this point that genetically engineered crops—they may do a number of things, but they don't increase yields There are no commercialized crops that are designed to deal with the climate crisis"
President George W Bush proposed the food package two weeks ago as aid groups and the UN World Food Program pressed Western governments to provide additional funds to bridge the gap caused by rising food prices The aid must win congressional approval
It would direct the US Agency for International Development to spend $150 million of the total aid package on development farming, which would include the use of GMO crops
The US is the UN food program's largest donor, providing nearly half the help the group receives from governments...
It gave about $11 billion to the WFP in both 2006 and 2007
The WFP provided $26 billion in aid in 2006
In April, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice suggested at a Peace Corps conference that "we need to look again at some of the issues concerning technology and food production I know that GMOs are not popular around the world, but there are places that drought-resistant crops should be a part of the answer"
Some aid organizations agree that it is time to consider GMO crops

US Pledges Rice to Philippines as Price Near Record

April 9 (Bloomberg) -- The US vowed to supply the Philippines, the biggest buyer of rice, with as much as it needs after some of the world's largest exporters cut sales to safeguard domestic supplies
You are assured absolutely,'' Kristie Kenney, ambassador to the southeast Asian country, told reporters in Bataan province, west of Manila today Philippine President Gloria Arroyo announced yesterday plans to purchase 1 million tons of the grain and said she would jail anyone found guilty of stealing rice from the people''
The US will help the nation weather the ups and downs of the world economy,'' embassy spokeswoman Rebecca Thompson said in a phone interview today...
The US called its former colony, which is fighting Muslim separatists in the south of the country, a front-line state in the war on terrorism'' in a 2007 congressional research service report
Rice, the staple food for half the world, has doubled in price in the past year as China, Egypt, Vietnam and India, representing more than a third of global shipments, reduced sales abroad to secure domestic supplies The price of the cereal in Chicago rose 0
9 percent today to $2067 per 100 pounds, below the record $2160 yesterday
You might see another 10 or 20 percent move to the upside,'' said Vijay Iyengar, Singapore-based managing director of Agrocorp International Pte, a commodity trading company

Thailand, the world's biggest supplier of rice, may ask soldiers to help protect some of the 21 million metric tons of the grain it has stockpiled amid concern record prices will attract thieves, a government official said Prices have doubled in the country this year, fueling inflation and hoarding
Soldiers and other security officials may be assigned to some state warehouses in the coming long weekend, when rice is often stolen, Yanyong Phuangrach, the director general of the Department of Internal Trade, told reporters in Bangkok today Thai businesses and government offices will be closed between April 14 and 16 for the country's new year celebrations
The Philippine National Food Authority said today it may add to subsidized rice sold in Manila and the police said they would increase officers at markets and stores to deter violence
The nation may raise imports of milled rice by as much as 42 percent to 27 million tons this year from 19 million tons in 2007 to discourage speculation by local traders, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said March 26
Philippine Imports
The Philippines imported no milled rice from the US in 2007, according to a USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report in February
US rice exports, the third largest behind those of Thailand and Vietnam, were forecast to jump 22 percent to 3
58 million tons in the year ended July 31, the US Department of Agriculture said March 11

Subic Bay, PHILIPPINES — Greenpeace warned Philippine authorities that a shipment of rice from the USA, currently being offloaded at Subic port, may be contaminated with genetically modified rice which is illegal under Philippine laws Greenpeace activists on rubber inflatables hung a banner stating "GMO RICE RISK" on the hull of MV Liberty Eagle, the container ship that is unloading about 44,000 metric tonnes of the suspect rice
"The NFA must quarantine this shipment and run stringent tests based on EU protocols before the rice is distributed to the public
The US and Philippine GMO testing procedures are grossly inadequate," said Daniel M Ocampo, Genetic Engineering Campaigner of Greenpeace Southeast Asia “GMO rice has not been proven safe for human consumption and should never be allowed in the country”
The NFA and US testing procedures require a GMO test sample of 100 grams out of 50,000 tons
That means about one grain out of every 500 million grains is tested In contrast, the EU requires a minimum of 25 kilogram sample for testing, making it easier to detect the presence of GMO grains
From 2007 to 2008, twenty three US rice shipments cleared by American authorities were barred in the EU for GMO contamination
In 2006, Greenpeace also revealed the presence of GMO-contaminated rice from the US (Bayer’s herbicide resistant LL601 rice) in supermarkets in Manila This prompted the NFA to issue an order requiring imported rice to be free from GMOs and has stopped the importation of rice from the US since late 2006 Purefeeds, the distributor of American GMO-contaminated rice, had to recall the remaining stocks from store shelves and replaced it with rice from Thailand
Bayer, the developer of GMO rice varieties that contaminated the US rice supply is facing lawsuits from farmers and US rice traders whose combined losses are estimated at around US$ 12 billion The adverse impacts of GMO rice contamination in the US still lingers in many countries around the world including the Philippines

US has a long rapsheet of sending GMO genetically altered frankenstein grains to poor and desparate countries amidst food crisis, and this is no exception: Remember the time when the Ethiopia turned down US genetically altered corn years back?
