Pfizer, the company that acknowledged criminal marketing of Neurontin
(2004), the company that paid millions of dollars in settlements for failing
to disclose the suicide risks of its antidepressant, Zoloft, now faces
criminal charges by the government of Nigeria for criminal testing of a
lethal antibiotic that is known to cause liver damage, Trovan (trovafloxan),
on children leading to untold deaths.

The Washington Post reports:
"The move represents a rare -- perhaps unprecedented -- instance in which
the developing world's anger at multinational drug companies has boiled over
into criminal charges. It also represents the latest in a string of
public-relations blows stemming from the decade-old clinical trial, in which
Pfizer says it acted ethically.

The government alleges that Pfizer researchers selected 200 children and
infants from crowds at a makeshift epidemic camp in Kano and gave about half
of the group an untested antibiotic called Trovan (trovafloxan). Researchers
gave the other children what the lawsuit describes as a dangerously low dose
of a comparison drug made by Hoffmann-La Roche. Nigerian officials say
Pfizer's actions resulted in the deaths of an unspecified number of children
and left others deaf, paralyzed, blind or brain-damaged."

The lawsuit further charges researchers with failure to obtain consent from
the children's families and with knowledge that Trovan was an experimental
drug with life-threatening side effects that was "unfit for human use."

A panel of experts convened by the Nigerian government examined Pfizer's
actions, but its final report was suppressed without explanation. The Post
obtained a copy last year, which revealed that the panel had concluded
Pfizer's actions violated Nigerian law, the international Declaration of
Helsinki and the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.

According to the suit, parents were banned from the ward where the drug
trial occurred, and the company left no medical records in Nigeria. The
criminal charges state: "Pfizer and its doctors agreed to do an illegal
act," and behaved "in a manner so rash and negligent as to endanger human
life."

Indeed, the prescription drug industry's corrupt practices once again pose a
danger to the world community.
Not since the Nazi Doctors Trial and the trial of 24 board members of the IG
Farben the giant chemical-pharmaceutical company (split into BASF, Bayer,
Hoechst->Aventis) who were tried and convicted at Nuremberg for crimes
against humanity (1946-1947), has a government filed a criminal case against
a pharmaceutical company and its contracted doctors.

Pfizer Faces Criminal Charges in Nigeria

Officials in Nigeria have brought criminal charges against pharmaceutical
giant Pfizer for the company's alleged role in the deaths of children who
received an unapproved drug during a meningitis epidemic.

Authorities in Kano, the country's largest state, filed eight charges this
month related to the 1996 clinical trial, including counts of criminal
conspiracy and voluntarily causing grievous harm. They also filed a civil
lawsuit seeking more than $2 billion in damages and restitution from Pfizer,
the world's largest drug company.

The move represents a rare -- perhaps unprecedented -- instance in which the
developing world's anger at multinational drug companies has boiled over
into criminal charges. It also represents the latest in a string of
public-relations blows stemming from the decade-old clinical trial, in which
Pfizer says it acted ethically.

The government alleges that Pfizer researchers selected 200 children and
infants from crowds at a makeshift epidemic camp in Kano and gave about half
of the group an untested antibiotic called Trovan. Researchers gave the
other children what the lawsuit describes as a dangerously low dose of a

experimental drug with life-threatening side effects that was "unfit for
human use." Parents were banned from the ward where the drug trial occurred,
the suit says, and the company left no medical records in Nigeria.

Pfizer and its doctors "agreed to do an illegal act," the criminal charges
state, and behaved "in a manner so rash and negligent as to endanger human
life."

Internal Pfizer records obtained by The Washington Post show that five
children died after being treated with the experimental antibiotic, though
there is no indication in the documents that the drug was responsible for
the deaths. Six children died while taking the comparison drug.

Suspicion stirred by news of the drug trial has been so intense in Kano, the
lawsuit says, that parents last year refused to allow their children to be
immunized against polio, frustrating a program aimed at wiping out one of
the disease's last refuges.

In a statement, Pfizer said it thinks it did nothing wrong and emphasized
that children with meningitis have a high fatality rate.
"It is indeed regrettable that, more than a decade after the meningitis
epidemic in Kano, the Nigerian government has taken legal action against
Pfizer and others for an effort that provided significant benefit to some of
Nigeria's youngest citizens," the statement said.

"Pfizer continues to emphasize -- in the strongest terms -- that the 1996
Trovan clinical study was conducted with the full knowledge of the Nigerian
government and in a responsible and ethical way consistent with the
company's abiding commitment to patient safety. Any allegations in these
lawsuits to the contrary are simply untrue -- they weren't valid when they
were first raised years ago and they're not valid today."

The criminal charges also name Pfizer's Nigerian subsidiary and eight
current or former executives and researchers. The charges could result in
fines and prison sentences ranging from six months to seven years per count,
according to Aliyu Umar, who served as Kano attorney general until earlier
this month.

Umar said he filed the charges with the backing of federal and state
authorities. He said it took 11 years to bring the action because officials
only learned details in recent years, through a series of investigative
reports in The Post. Three months ago, Umar's office obtained a six-year-old
Nigerian government report that concluded Pfizer's actions violated
international law.

"We realize we are the Third World and we need assistance," Umar said. "But
we frown on people who think they can take advantage of us, especially if
it's for profit. That's why we decided we needed to take action against
Pfizer.

"Those people responsible should be punished, whether in Nigeria or in the
United States , for what they did to our people."

Pfizer's drug trial came to public attention in December 2000, when The Post
published the results of a year-long investigation into pharmaceutical
testing in the developing world. Nigerians met the news with street
demonstrations and demands for reform.

Nigeria's health minister appointed a panel of experts to look into Pfizer's
actions, but its final report was suppressed without explanation. Last year,
The Post obtained a copy, which revealed that the panel had concluded

The panel said Pfizer administered an oral form of Trovan that apparently
had never been given to children with meningitis. It said there were no
records documenting that Pfizer told the children or their parents that they
were part of a drug trial. And it said an approval letter from a Nigerian
ethics committee, which Pfizer used to justify its actions, was a sham
concocted long after the trial ended.

"The families of the children who [Pfizer] used as laboratory guinea pigs
were led to believe and in fact understood that the Defendants were
providing their children with volunteer relief, clearly focused humanitarian
medical intervention and nothing more," the lawsuit says.

Parents were not told that alternative treatments were available, it adds.

The suit charges that parents were barred from Pfizer's ward and that the
company's own lab tests had shown Trovan's life-threatening side effects.
Researchers allegedly administered the comparison drug, Rocephin, in
dangerously low doses to make Trovan look more effective.

The lawsuit contends that Pfizer researchers left the area during the
epidemic, took all medical records and "obliterated any evidence" of the
trial. "Defendant's illegal conduct was deliberate and solely motivated by
financial considerations," it says.

Every surviving child suffered one or more disabilities, the lawsuit says,
adding that the state of Kano has incurred major costs caring for the
children and otherwise dealing with the drug trial 's repercussions.

In its statement, Pfizer said the drug was in late-stage development and had
been tested on 5,000 patients in a number of countries. "Pfizer's doctors
had solid scientific evidence that it would provide a safe and effective
treatment against the deadly disease," the statement said. The treatment
"indisputably helped save the lives of almost 200 children," the company
said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration never approved Trovan for use in
treating American children. After being cleared for adult use in 1997, the
drug quickly became one of the most prescribed antibiotics in the United
States. But Trovan was later associated with reports of liver damage and
deaths, leading the FDA to restrict its use in 1999. It remains available in
the United States, but European regulators have banned it.

The giant food corporations have one mission: selling more food and beverage products to consumers. Succeeding with that mission depends on keeping consumers in the dark on certain issues such as the presence cancer-causing chemicals found in popular food products.

Here are ten things the food corporations, whose products dominate grocery store shelves across the United States and other countries, absolutely do not want you to know.

1. The ingredients listed on the label aren't the only things in the food. Cancer-causing chemicals such as acrylamides may be formed in the food during high-heat processing, yet there's no requirement to list them on the label. Residues of solvents, pesticides and other chemicals may also be present, but also do not have to be listed. The National Uniformity for Food Act, currently being debated in the U.S. Congress, would make it illegal (yes, illegal) for states to require cancer warnings on foods that contain cancer-causing chemicals (such as California's Proposition 65.) 2. Monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is added to thousands of food and grocery products through a dozen different innocent-sounding ingredients, imbalances endocrine system function, disabling normal appetite regulation and causing consumers to keep eating more food. This chemical not only contributes to nationwide obesity, it also helps food companies boost repeat business. See articles on MSG.

3. MSG is routinely hidden in foods in these ingredients: yeast extract, torula yeast, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and autolyzed yeast. Thousands of common grocery products contain one or more of these chemical taste enhancers, including nearly all "vegetarian" foods such as veggie burgers (read labels to check). 4. ADHD in children is caused almost entirely by the consumption of processed food ingredients such as artificial colors and refined carbohydrates. Eighty percent of so-called ADHD children who are taken off processed foods are cured of ADHD in two weeks. See articles on ADHD.

5. The chemical sweetener aspartame, when exposed to warm temperatures for only a few hours, begins to break down into chemicals like formaldehyde and formic acid. Formaldehyde is a potent nerve toxin and causes damage to the eyes, brain and entire nervous system. Aspartame has been strongly linked to migraines, seizures, blurred vision and many other nervous system problems. See articles on aspartame.

6. Most food dips (like guacamole dip) are made with hydrogenated oils, artificial colors and monosodium glutamate. Many guacamole dips don't even contain avocados.

7. Plastic food packaging is a potent health hazard. Scientists now know that plastics routinely seep the chemical bisphenol A into the food, where it is eaten by consumers. Cooking in plastic containers multiplies the level of exposure. Bisphenol is a hormone disruptor and can cause breast formation in men and severe hormonal imbalances in women. 8. Milk produced in the United States comes from cows injected with synthetic hormones that have been banned in every other advanced nation in the world. These hormones help explain why unusually young teenage girls develop breasts at such a young age, or why hormone-related cancers like prostate cancer are being discovered in unprecedented numbers. In order to protect Monsanto, the manufacturer of hormones used in the industry, the USDA currently bans organic milk producers from claiming their milk comes from cows that were not treated with synthetic hormones. Even organic milk is now under fire as the Organic Consumers Association says Horizon milk products are falsely labeled as organic. Make it yourself with a Vitamix, water and a nut milk bag.)

9. Most grocery products that make loud health claims on their packaging are, in reality, nutritionally worthless (like meal replacement shakes, instant chocolate milk, etc.). The most nutritious foods are actually those the FDA does not allow to make any health claims whatsoever: fresh produce. See articles on food labeling.

10. Food manufacturers actually "buy" shelf space and position at grocery stores. That's why the most profitable foods (and hence, the ones with the lowest quality ingredients) are the most visible on aisle end caps, checkout lanes and eye-level shelves throughout the store. The effect of all this is to provide in-store marketing and visibility to the very foods and beverages that promote obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and other degenerative conditions now ravaging consumers around the world. The study is by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Oakland-based Organization to Achieve Solutions in Substance Abuse (OASIS). It was published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. It found marijuana users being treated for HCV three times more likely to have a "sustained virological response," meaning the virus can't be detected six months after treatment ends. HCV treatment with ribavirin and interferon causes severe side effects, so many patients quit the long regimen too early. Of 71 HCV patients studied, 21 finished with a sustained virological response: 12 of the 22 cannabis users and nine of the 49 nonusers. "(M)odest cannabis use may offer symptomatic and virological benefit to some patients... by helping them maintain adherence to the challenging medication regimen," the study concluded. Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C., issued a news release touting this as "a landmark study, showing that medical marijuana can literally save lives. 16 Reasons Why People Avoid Dairy Products.

Most North Americans, including some vegetarians, still consume large amounts of dairy products. Here are sixteen reasons why it is a good idea to consider eliminating dairy products.

  • 1. Human beings have no nutritional requirements for the processed milk from the udder of a cow. The nutrients found in milk are readily available from a wide variety of plant foods, including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. As a matter of fact, until refrigeration came along, the vast majority of humans and animals on the planet consumed little or no milk products. Most Asians (more then 1 billion), most Africans (almost a billion), and many other cultures around the world still consume no dairy products. These people do not suffer from acute cow's milk deficiency disease, and have much lower rate of osteoporosis then the countries that consume dairy products.   • 2. Dairy products are high in fat and like all animal fats very high in saturated fats. Cow's milk straight from the udder is 55% fat. Unfortunately for consumers processed cow's milk found on the store shelf is purposely mislabeled to give the impression that it is low fat. 2% milk is actually 35% fat. Cheeses are very high fat. Those labeled between 7% and 37% fat are actually 35% to 77% fat. Butter is nearly 100% pure fat. Though skim milk products (skim milk, yogurt and cottage cheese) are considerably lower in fat, they retain the problems noted below. Also, if they skim the fat off one product it ultimately ends up in other food products.
  • 3. Cow's milk, like all animal products, also contains cholesterol. This cholesterol, which is designed specifically by a cow for a cow, (unlike your own cholesterol, which is designed by you for you) contributes to cardiovascular disease and gallstones (whose principle component is cholesterol, hence the often used medical term "cholesterol gallstones"). Studies comparing the cardiovascular status of lacto-ovo vegetarians (consume egg and dairy) and vegans (consume no animal source foods) have proven that while both are healthier than meat eaters, vegans have better cardiovascular status than vegetarians who consume dairy products.
  • 4. Iron deficiency is more likely on a dairy rich diet. Cow's milk products are very low in iron, thus, if they become a major part of one's diet, iron deficiency is more likely. In addition, clinical studies have shown that infants consuming cow's milk lose small amounts of blood from their digestive tracts. For this reason, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants below one year of age not be given whole cow's milk. "We now think that iron deficiency at that age can lead to brain damage" - Dr. Lewis Barnes, University of Wisconsin Pediatrician. If you consumed only dairy products, you would have to drink 50 cups of milk to reach your RDA's for iron. If you have any doubts about this, check the nutrition label on the side of a cereal box. You will see that the iron status of the cereal increases by 1% or less, with the addition of 1/2 cup of cow's milk.
  • 5. Insulin dependent diabetes (Type I or childhood onset) is linked to dairy products. Epidemiological studies of various countries show a strong correlation between the use of dairy products and the incidence of insulin dependent diabetes. Researchers in 1992 found that a specific dairy protein sparks an auto immune reaction which is believed to be what destroys the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. Even the dairy industry has acknowledged in their own literature that this does occur, but only in about 3% of those who may be susceptible. Every adult who does decide to feed cow's milk to a child must ask themselves; should I really put my child at risk?
  • 6. Ovarian cancer is linked to dairy products. The milk sugar lactose is broken down in the body into another sugar, galactose. In turn, galactose is further broken down by enzymes. According to a study by Daniel Cramer, M.D., and his colleagues at Harvard, when dairy product consumption exceeds the enzymes' capacity to break down galactose, there is a build-up of galactose in the blood which may affect a woman's ovaries. Some women have particularly low levels of these enzymes, and when they consume dairy products on a regular basis, their risk can triple that of other women. Please note; the problem is the milk sugar not the fat, thus nonfat dairy products cannot solve this problem. In fact, yogurt and cottage cheese seem to be of most concern because the bacteria used in their manufacture increases the production of galactose from lactose.
  • 7. Cataracts are also linked to dairy products. The galactose that is a breakdown product of lactose appears to be capable of damaging the lens of the eye, leading to cataracts. There are other factors which also contribute to cataracts, such as ultraviolet light and vitamin deficiencies.
  • 8. Many people, particularly Asians and Africans, are unable to digest the milk sugar lactose. this can result in diarrhea and gas. On the other hand, they may be the lucky ones. Many Caucasians can tolerate lactose, only to be unable to rapidly breakdown the galactose which circulates in their blood, possibly contributing to cataracts and ovarian cancer, as noted above. Lactose intolerance may be nature's early warning system. Lactose digesting pills such as Lactaid, may help breakdown the sugar, however they do not solve the underlying cause which is a signal by your body that this food product is not acceptable in your system.
  • 9. Milk is one of the most common causes of food allergies. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reports that cow's milk is the most common food allergy amongst children. Respiratory problems, canker sores, skin conditions, post nasal drip, and other subtle and not so subtle allergies can be caused by dairy products. The sad thing is that many people never know that their problems are caused by dairy sensitivity. Taking a break from dairy products can often lead to surprising improvements. Asthmatics, in particular, should give themselves a long vacation from dairy products to see whether their condition improves.
  • 10. Like other products from animals, mammary secretions contain frequent contaminants, from pesticides to drugs. About a third of all milk products are contaminated with antibiotic traces. The dairy industry slogan "something for every body" takes on a different meaning, doesn't it?
  • 11. Dairy products, despite common myths, do not stop osteoporosis. Evidence shows that the rate of bone loss is largely unaffected by dairy products. Numerous studies have shown that the countries with the highest intake of dairy products also have the highest incidence of osteoporosis, and that consuming large amounts of dairy products simply will not maintain bone density.
  • 12. One out of every five babies suffers from colic. Pediatricians learned long ago that cow's milk was often the reason. We now know that breast feeding mothers can have colicky babies if the mothers are consuming cow's milk. The cow's antibodies can pass through the mother's blood stream into her breast milk and to the baby.
  • 13. Cow's milk is not a natural source of Vitamin A and D. These two are fortified into the milk. In many provinces, states and countries it must be added by law. Often the amount is not well regulated and these two fat soluble vitamins are in excess and can contribute to toxicity, as well as calcium loss and osteoporosis. Your best source of vitamin A is consuming products high in beta-carotene, which the body uses to produce vitamin A. Once enough vitamin A is produced , your body stops producing it. Vitamin D is actually not even a vitamin but a hormone. Your body produces vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. It is estimated that an average of 15 minutes of sunlight per day on the hands and face is enough for your body to produce the necessary amount of vitamin D. Please note; it is the vitamin A and D that is produced by your own body that is necessary for your own vital functions, not that of another animal or from a genetically engineered substitute.
  • 14. Dairy products, like all other animal products, do not contain any fiber. The more dairy products that one consumes, the less fiber rich foods are eaten. Fiber has been shown to reduce your risk of a variety of diseases including heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
  • 15. Mad cow's disease is still a real possibility in North America, even for those consuming dairy products. Contrary to popular belief, the risk of mad cow's disease is alive and well in Canada and the U.S. We are doing exactly what the British farmers did to spread the disease into the food chain. We still take downer cows (beef and dairy cows that have suddenly died for no apparent cause) grind them up and add them to cattle feed. This cattle feed is then fed to food animals including dairy cows. In Great Britain dairy cows were found to be one of the carriers of the disease. The highest rates of leukemia are found in the children who consume the most dairy products. The leukemia virus is resistant to pasteurization and has been found in retail dairy products.

Cancer Risks from Microwaves Confirmed

Evidence linking weak electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to leukaemia and other cancers has been fast accumulating in recent years [1-3] ( Electromagnetic Fields Double Leukemia Risks , Mobile Phones & Cancer , SiS 18; Electromagnetic Fields, Leukaemia and DNA Damage , SiS 24). Such ‘non-thermal' effects of EMR – due to levels well below that sufficient to bring about any heating - have been observed even before World War II [4] ( Non-Thermal Effects , SiS 17).

During the cold war period, a four-fold excess of cancer cases was diagnosed among the staff of the American Embassy in Moscow that had been secretly irradiated with microwaves at well below the threshold set in current guidelines. The US State Department study on this episode was described in a paper published in 1997 [5]. This was among the earliest evidence for non-thermal effects of microwaves, and many studies are now confirming the high cancer risks of people exposed to microwaves from mobile phone base stations and transmitters around the world. Microwaves are no different from EMRs in the lower frequency range in that respect; except that microwaves may be even more potent in promoting cancer and other illnesses [6] ( Drowning in a Sea of Microwaves, the Wi-Fi Revolution , SiS 34).
Ten year study in a German city found cancer risk trebled

In June 1993, a GSM transmitter antenna was set up in the Southern Germany city of Naila, and became operational since September 1993. The transmitter antenna has a power of 15dbW (31.6W) per channel in the 935 MHz range. In December 1997, an installation from another company was added.

Several doctors living in Naila decided to respond to the call by Wolfram König, President of the Federal Agency for Radiation Protection, to collaborate in assessing the risk posed by mobile phone radiation. They carried out a study to examine whether people living close to transmitter antennas had increased risk of cancer [7].

They found that the proportion of newly developed cancer cases was significantly higher among those who had lived during the past ten years at a distance of up to 400m from the cellular transmitter site, compared to those living further away, and the patients fell ill on average 8 years earlier. In the years 1999-2004, five years after the transmitter has been installed and operating, the relative risk of getting cancer had trebled for the residents within 400 m of the installation compared to inhabitants outside the area.

For the purpose of the study, an inner and an outer area were defined. The inner area covered the land within a distance of 400 m from the transmitter, the outer area comprise land further than 400 m. In the inner area, additional emissions come from the secondary lobes of the transmitter. Thus, the outer area has significantly reduced radiation intensity. Computer simulation and measurements both show that radiation in the inner area is 100 times higher compared to outer area. The measurements of all transmitter stations show that the intensity of radiation from the cell phone transmitter station in Naila in the inner area was higher than the electromagnetic fields from radio, television, or radar, according to measurements made in previous studies.

Data gathered from nearly 1 000 patients covered almost 90 percent of the local residents, and all patients had been living during the entire observation period of 10 years at the same address. The social differences are small, there is no ethnic diversity, no heavy industry and in the inner area there are neither high voltage cable nor electric trains. The average ages of the residents are similar in the inner and outer areas.

For the entire period from 1994 to 2004, the odds ratio (OR) for getting cancer in the inner, strongly exposed area compared to the outer area was 2.35. The average age of developing cancer was 64.1 years in the inner area, whereas in the outer area it was 72.6 years, a difference of 8.5 years. The average for Germany as a whole for developing cancer is 66.5 years, among men, 66 and women 67.

The new cancer cases showed a high annual constant value. Considering only the first 5 years, there was no significant increased risk of getting cancer in the inner area. However, for the period 1999 to 2004, the OR for getting cancer was 3.38 in the inner area compared to the outer area. Breast cancer topped the list, with an average age of 50.8 year compared with 69.9 years in the outer area, but cancers of the prostate, pancreas, bowel, skin melanoma, lung and blood cancer were all increased
Four fold cancer risk in Israel

Researchers from Tel-Aviv University, Israel, compared 622 people living near a cell-phone transmitter station for 3-7 years who were patients of one health clinic in Netanya, with 1 222 controls who get their medical services in a clinic located nearby, with very closely matched environment, workplace and occupational characteristics [8]. The exposure to mobile phone radiation began one year before the start of the study.

The cell-phone transmitter came into service in July 1996, and people in the first health clinic live within a half circle of 350 m radius from the transmitter. The antenna has a total maximum transmission power of 1 500 W at 850 MHz, with a 50 Hz modulation. Both the measured and the predicted power density in the whole exposed area were far below 5.3 mW/m 2 , and hence far below the current guidelines.

There were 8 cases of different kinds of cancer diagnosed in a period of just one year (July 1997 to June 1998): 3 cases of breast cancer, one of ovarian cancer, lung cancer, Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymphatic system), osteoid osteoma (bone tumour) and kidney cancer. This compares with 31 cases per 10 000 a year in the general population of Israel, and 2 per 1 222 in the matched controls of the nearby clinic.

The relative risk of cancer was 4.15 for those living near the cell-phone transmitter compared with the entire population of Israel. As seven out of eight cancer cases were women, the relative cancer rates for females were 10.5 for those living near the transmitter station and 0.6 for the controls relative for the whole town of Netanya

One year after the close of the study, 8 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the microwave exposed area and two in the control area.
Mobile phone use in Sweden

Sweden has a long history of mobile phone use in a relatively uniform population, which is ideal for studying the health impacts of exposure to electromagnetic radiation.

Analogue phones operating at 450 MHz were introduced in Sweden in 1981, and was at first used only in the car with fixed external antenna. Portable analogue 450 MHz phones were introduced in 1984, and analogue 900 MHz phones came into use between 1986 and 2000 [9].

The digital system GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) started in 1991 and has increased sharply in recent years to become the most common phone type. This system uses dual band, 900 and 1800 MHz. From 2003, the third generation of mobile phones, 3G or UMTs (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) started operating in Sweden at 1 900 MHz.

Desktop cordless phones also depend on wireless technology. The 800-900 MHz analogue system was introduced in 1988, and digital cordless telephones (DECT) that operate at 1900 MHz have been in use since 1991.

The Nordic radiation protection authorities as well as the Swedish work environmental board recommend hands free devices for employees, but very few workplaces offer them.

Almost everyone has a cell phone today in Sweden, and the country very likely saturated with mobile phone transmitters. The use of cellular and cordless telephones has increased dramatically during the past decade, and with it, concern over the health impacts of microwave exposure, and the brain is the main target organ.
Increased risk of brain tumours

Since the latter half of the 1990s, cancer researchers at the University of Örebro, Sweden, have carried out six case-control studies: three on brain tumours, one on salivary gland tumours, one non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and one testicular cancer. Exposure level was assessed by self-administered questionnaires [9].

The results showed that the odds ration (OR) of acoustic neuroma (a non-malignant tumour of the auditory nerve) was 2.9 for analogue cellular phones, 1.5 for digital cellular phones and cordless phones. The corresponding OR for astrocytoma (a tumour of astrocyte nerve cell) grade III-IV was 1.7, 1.5 and 1.5. The ORs increased with latency period, with the highest estimates at >10 years from first use. Lower ORs were found for astrocytoma grade 1-II, and no association was found with salivary gland tumours, NHL or testicular cancer, although as association with NHL of T-cell type could not be ruled out.

In a further review of 18 studies on brain tumours [10], two cohort and 16 case-control, the results show that mobile phone use for more than 10 years give a consistent pattern of an increased risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma (a tumour that begins in a glial cell), and risk is highest for the side of the brain next to the mobile phone.

The increased risk of glioma with mobile phone use for more than ten years was confirmed by other scientists in a population case control study in three regions of Germany, the odds ratio was 2.2 [11].
